wet start to the day. >> you may consider leaving the umbrella at home today. tom kierein is here with our forecast and we really did dodge a bullet on this storm. >> it was a close call. but what a powerful stm. it has been pounding new jersey. now the snow has ended in new jersey, but still snowing in long island and much of new england up to a foot of heavy wet snow in parts of central and western connecticut. and it's still snowing there. the storm center is circulating, just south of nantucket. here is nantucket. here's cape cod. and it is showing some trends that it's weakening a little bit as it's traveling just about due north, so they're going to continue to get snow, wind, and rain in new england. for us locally, we've had a few scattered sprinkles, a little bit of flurry in the sleet activity in the last few hours, but that's ended a couple hours ago. but getting still a few sprinkles, maybe a little bit of wet snow. it's cold out of the mountains, below freezing there.

but in maryland, virginia, the district, we're around 40 degrees and we'll stay that way for another few hours, just a small chance or a sprinkle or flurry. chilly and breezy by noontime. afternoon highs mid to upper 40s, to low 50s by mid afternoon. and a blustery wind. i'll be back in ten minutes with another update. first 4 traffic this thursday morning with danella. >> traveling 66 eastbound, had a crash but it quickly cleared and now it's out of the roadway altogether. this time, northbound at glebe, the accident there, still see police on the scene. travel lanes are open, and checking again, if you're traveling i-95 northbound just north of 32, had an accident involving an overturned box truck. now it looks to be absolutely clear. so continuing your commute northbound, no issues there. back over to you. this new storm is hammering

the northeast. >> that's right. so far, it is responsible for at least 100,000 new power outages in parts of new york and new jersey. the rain, the wet snow all piling up on homes already damaged by sandy. the long island railroad, one of nation's busiest commuter train systems, suspended all of its service. new york city police urged resints to leave low lying neighborhoods. a lot of people, though, are staying behind because they're worried about looting. >> the snow is only adding to the misery for people who haven't had power or gas in 11 days because of sandy. the ripping winds, pounding surf and wet rain stunned people in oyster bay. that community is just one of many the on long island where power outages persist. some wonder if power will be restoer restored by thanksgiving. >> it's unbelievable to go from a hurricane to a nor'easter and driving in the snow in a week, same ten days. it's pretty unbelievable. >> utility companies are working around the clock to try to

restore power and get the heat turned on as quickly as possible. traveling by airplane is not easy as well there. are a new round of flight delays and cancellations. >> airlines cancelled at least 1,300 flights out of the new york area. megan, how bad is it? >> reporter: well, we're seeing about six cancellations right now up on the board. we're seeing a number of delays. if you're among those who have their flights cancelled here this morning, you're not a happy camper. it's not been a great day for a lot of folks trying to get to the new york area. look at the board. it's hit or miss. here's laguardia. these are the flights. 6:00 a.m. flight is on time. the 6:15 cancelled. similarly, the 6:59 on time. but if you're leaving at 8:00 a.m. to laguardia, cancelled. we're also seeing some delays here. delayed by about an hour here, a flight to milwaukee delayed by ten and a half hours.

we spoke to a man trying to get from fresno to new york city, he's been trying since wednesday morning. >> just trying to get to new york. jfk, laguardia, newark, all that shut down. made it to venice and hopefully we'll get this flight this morning. our bags are still in denver. >> and there's his flight, listed on time, so hopefully he's okay. the problem is their missing baggage has their dress uniforms. they're in the military. they need those uniforms for an event they're attending once they reach new york. they have no idea where their luggage is at this point. perhaps it's in denver, perhaps not. reporting live from reagan national, megan mcgrath, news4. fears over the so called fiscal cliff here in the u.s. are taking a toll on markets overseas. stocks in asia down significantly after a ratings

agency threatened to downgrade the u.s. credit rating unless president obama and congress reach a deal on a spending plan by the end of the year. japan's nikkei index lost 1.3% in early trading. south korea's main index also down more than 1% today. and investors here in the u.s. hope the markets rebound from yesterday's free fall. the dow fell more than 300 points. the nasdaq and the s&p also suffered big losses. new this morning, we've learned president obama will be making a ground breaking trip in two weeks. an official from myanmar says the president will visit on either november 18th or 19th. it will be the first ever visit to the country by a u.s. president. the obama administration is trying to encourage democracy in that country. the president is also scheduled to visit nearby thailand and cambodia that same week. tony tull is at the news4 live desk now with breaking news. >> we are just getting word out of afghanistan about multiple

deadly bombings by insurgents. in kandahar, a suicide bomber killed three police officers and wounded two others. and in the eastern part of the city, a convoy struck a land mine and killed five troops. officials say with nato's troop drawdown, insurgents are focusing their attacks on the afghan police and army. that is the latest from the live desk. we're also getting word about something in pakistan. at least four people injured in a bomb blast in that country's largest city. that explosion ripped through the heart of karachi. investigators believe the blast may have been targeted at the country's paramilitary rangers. no one is claiming responsibility for this attack, but taliban militants are known to operate in that city. a developing story out of guatemala. at least 48 people are dead after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit near the border with mexico. landslides destroying homes, businesses and blocking roads.

thousands of soldiers are heading to the region to help the local police hand out emergency supplies. this is the strongest earthquake to hit guatemala since 1975. a death investigation near the campus of gallaudet university in northeast d.c. a body found outside of a burning car just off brentwood parkway around 9:00 last night. no word yet on the cause of death. we're working to find out more from police. we'll bring you updates throughout the morning. in prince george's county, police are looking for a gunman who shot and killed a man in hill crest heights. the shooting happened around 7:00 last night on 23rd parkway. officers found a man outside an apartment with a gunshot wound. police are still trying to find out what led to that shooting. also new this morning, illinois congressman jesse jackson jr. is reportedly in talks with federal prosecutors negotiating a plea deal. a source tells the "chicago sun-times," "no one has pled guilty, but plea discussions are ongoing." the democrat is under investigation for misusing campaign funds to decorate his

washington home. he's also under information for allegedly buying a $40,000 rolex for a friend. if jackson pleads guilty to a felony, he will forced to resign his congressional seat. he just won re-election with 64% of the vote. eight minutes after the hour on this thursday morning, still ahead the group calling on lawmakers to avoid deep cuts that could impact millions of american families. what you can do today to ensure a great view of the presidential inauguration. >> we have lingering sprinkles, maybe some flurries in the are

welcome back. the snow is piling up in new york city. this is a look at the ice rink at rockefeller center. you can see some snow and rain falling there. the storm is expected to bring just a few inches of snow to new york city, but more to outlying areas. that will make a tough travel day for people trying to get into new york city today. brin has more on the storm from long island. >> reporter: good morning. it seems to be like deja vu for many people here on long island. not so much because of the weather. we haven't seen snow just yet. but because of the headaches. commuting is presenting so many problems for people. the -- because of the

nor'easter, there are signal problems, delaying trains for commuters that are about to head into the city this morning. as far as power is concerned, the main utility here has been having issues. so much criticism from so many people because power is not restored to everyone just yet, especially after sandy. but now more people lost power because of the storm. the utility says it's going to add crews to try to get the power restored, but it is presenting many problems. children going back to school. many of them headed back yesterday and now they're off again today because of the snow. so it's one thing after another. it doesn't seem to be slowing down as we're nearing the weekend. let's go back to you. >> and now let's go about three hours south. tim furlong continues our team coverage live in new jersey. tim, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning. i think on the southern part of the jersey shore, we dodged a

little bit of a bullet. just north of atlantic city, you can see the water in the inland here. nobody is complaining. it is where it's supposed to be, below the docks. we have had a little bit of street flooding overnight. the high tide was about 2:00 a.m. this morning, but you can see, when we first got here this was completely covered over this water over this curb. it has receded quite a bit. no big deal there. there have been about 5,800 new power outages in this part of the county alone. but overall, not too bad. the nor'easter mercifully seemed to back off a little bit as it was coming toward the coast yesterday. best of all, that means all these thousands and thousands of homes that were very soggy over the last few days, they're not getting soggy again. cleanup will be able to continue here at the jersey shore. back to you. teachers from across northern virginia will urge lawmakers on capitol hill to avoid the so called fiscal

cliff. education advocates will offer statistics that show the impact a financial crisis would have on children. all federal education programs would face millions of dollars in cuts if congress and the president can't reach an agreement on a spending plan. house speaker john boehner says he is willing to work with president obama to reach a deal. boehner says this week's election is proof the american people want republicans and democrats to work together for a solution to a crisis that could plunge the country back into a recession. >> the american people have spoken. they've re-elected president obama and they have again re-elected a republican majority in the house of representatives. if there's a mandate in yesterday's results, it's a mandate for us to find a way to work together on the solutions to the challenges that we all face as a nation. >> boehner says the deal could include new tax revenue to help reduce the national debt. don't be surprised if you've lost a few friends on facebook if you've shared your thoughts on the election on the social

networking site. the election is sparking a facebook feud. those posts often offended people with different political believes. some took the dramatic step of unfriending the ranters, and for those not ready to end the friendship over politics, there's always the option of unsubscribing to that person. >> nobody knows if you unsubscribe. if you defriend -- defriending is a pretty serious offense. >> so we asked on our own facebook page, how people are handling the political pontificating. one viewer said that she made a facebook friend list with only people who share her political believes. right now, preparations are already under way for president obama's second inauguration. the stage already going up on the west lawn of the capital, although a lot of people in the city believe that crowds could be a bit smaller than four years ago. on that day, metro saw its most ridership ever with more than one and a half million trips on

let's take a live look outside at 41 degrees. all calm in the nation's capital. it's time for weather and traffic on the 1s. we got lucky again. >> oh, boy. and thankfully, because this is still a powerful coastal storm. we did have a little bit of sleet, a little flurry activity that fell between 10:00 last night until about 2:00 this morning, but that's now gone. but eastern new england and long island in parts of southern new england getting pounded with snow, rain, and wind. yesterday afternoon, the buoy had a wind gust of 76 miles an hour. gusts from nantucket, martha's vineyard, along the southeastern massachusetts coast are still around 60 miles an hour. this is a powerful storm and it's still snowing into parts of connecticut where they've had upwards of a foot of snow. locally, we just have a few sprinkles coming down from the north, now into northeastern maryland. a little bit of wet snow falling

again. they're expiring. the 2% payroll tax cut, it's expiring as well. the bush tax cuts expiring at the end of the year. medicare payments, big cut coming for doctors and hospitals there. and automatic spending cuts that could affect the pentagon, $500 billion just at the pentagon. bogey their number two supplier already announced a second round of executive layoffs. are republicans and democrats here on capitol hill willing to work together? >> the american people want us to work together. republicans want us to work together. >> mr. president, this is your moment. we're ready to be led. not as democrats or republicans, but as americans. we want you to lead. not as a liberal or conservative, but as president of the united states of america. >> so at least a tone for compromise here on capitol hill.

before the election, the president said he thought he could get a deficit deal in place within six months of being re-elected. the clock is ticking. the race for president may have already been decided, but we still don't know who won florida. they're still counting the ballots there in the sunshine state. voters who were standing in line when the polls closed tuesday night were promised they would still get a chance to vote. many of them were still in line into the wee hours of the morning. election administrators blamed the problem on a lengthy ballot, which contained 11 state constitutional amendment questions. they say that they also received thousands of absentee ballots, which take longer to ballot. closer to home, maryland's board of elections are looking into complaints it received from voters. the baltimore senate is reporting that the aclu received reports from dozens of people who said their name was not listed in rolls even though they voted four years ago.

police arrested a man who stole a truck with president obama's audio equipment in it. federal prosecutors charged eric brown of richmond with theft of government property. that truck disappeared from a richmond area parking lot late last october. the equipment included the president's teleprompter. no classified or sensitive information was in that truck. brown faces up to ten years in prison if he's convicted. this morning, there is more fallout from sandy. the governor of new york fired his emergency management director. this move comes after steven kirk diverted crews to remove a tree that fell on his long island driveway last week, that happened shortly after sandy ravaged new york city and crews were responding to thousands of cities. kerr apparently wasn't even at home at the time, he was in albany. the man who shot gabrielle giffords and 18 others will learn his fate. jared lee loughner will be sentenced today for the deadly shooting last year.

giffords is supposed to attend the sentencing today. her husband mark kelly will make a statement on her behalf. it is the first time the victims will face loughner since the shooting. loughner will not be sentenced to death because he agreed to a plea deal earlier this year. six were killed and 13 wounded in that shooting in january of last year. the man behind an anti-muslim film that sparked violence in the middle east will spend a year in prison. the 55-year-old was sentenced after he admitted to violating his probation from an unrelated 2010 bank fraud conviction. he served a 21-month sentence for that conviction. none of the probation violations had to do with the film called "innocence of muslims." a woman caught on video passing a school bus by driving on the sidewalk has been given an unusual punishment. a judge has ordered that she that harden stand on a corner near where the incident occurred and hold a sign saying "only an idiot would drive around a school bus." harden's license was also

suspended for 30 days and she had to pay a $250 court cost. we want to know what you think. head over to our facebook page or tweet us. today, the montgomery county health department will work with the school system to look for ways to cut drug and alcohol use among teens. about 15% of students said they had used prescription drugs without doctor permission at least once. local high schools have started programs to bring in speakers to talk about the dangers of drugs, but the county is looking for other ways to prevent drug use. >> most d.c. charter schools met minimum standards. that's according to the d.c. public charter school board. d.c.'s public charter school in the edgewood neighborhood earned the best ratings, followed by two kip d.c. campuses. in bethesda, the uso celebrated the ground breaking for the new warrior center, the

cottage-like facility will provide space for wounded service members to meet privately with their families and even share a cooked meal together. the family center will also offer recreation and counselling services. this is the second such center in the washington area. the first one is at fort bellvoire in northern virginia. disaster strikes twice. the two incidents this month at a maryland apartment complex forced dozens of people to move out. >> and the search for the fairfax groper. the common clues this attack ser leaving behind. you may f

14 before the hour now. for the ninth time in just two months, police say a serial fondler has struck in one fairfax county neighborhood. two women just miles apart

reported being grabbed in springfield last week within about a half-hour of each other. investigators believe the same man is responsible for all nine attacks over the last two months. some of which have involved underage girls. also in fair fax, police trying to fig your out who assaulted a 17-year-old girl at a library. she tells police she was studying at the thomas jefferson library in falls church when she saw a man watching her. she says he followed her into the restroom where he grabbed her and assaulted her before she screamed and kicked him and chased him away. parents say they're shocked. >> it's scary. sometimes i let my daughter inside and come to the car. so that's why i'm very worried about it. >> the girl was shaken up. she was not badly hurt. police are still looking for that man. the man suspected to be the east coast rapist will appear in a northern virginia courtroom later this month. 41-year-old aaron thomas is expected to plead guilty to the 2009 attack on three teenagers in prince william county and to

the 2001 rape of a 41-year-old woman at her leesburg apartment. thomas was arrested last year in connecticut after a multi-state search. he is believed to be responsible for at least 17 attacks on women since 1997 in virginia, maryland, connecticut, and rhode island. thomas faces life in prison for both pleas. a second fire in less than a month at a maryland apartment complex has left about 30 people without a home this morning. this latest blaze started yesterday afternoon damaging about a dozen apartments. the fire and smoke were so intense that firefighters were forced to only attack the fire from the outside. residents say the cold, damp weather makes their situation that much tougher. >> you're comfortable, warm, dry, and the next day, you're out of the house. >> investigators do not believe the two fires in the neighborhood are connected, but they are still trying to figure out the cause of yesterday's

fire. 11 days after hurricane sandy pelted new york and new jersey, the northeast is facing another storm. this time, as much as is foot of snow could fall in some places already flooded by sandy. danielle leigh is live in trenton, new jersey now with a look at the conditions there. it has been a tough time in the northeast, many still without power there dealing with the aftermath of hurricane sandy. here is more with danielle. >> reporter: rain, snow, and wind at times over 60 miles an hour is drenching homes. entire communities already rearranged by hurricane sandy. >> it's overwhelming. >> it's very sad. it's very sad to see us getting pounded again. >> waves lashed out on beaches nearly washed away in last week's superstorm, leading to new fears of flooding. from seabright to queens, people are seeking shelter once again. >> a shelter is available at

hillcrest high school. >> reporter: even as crews rushed to problematic power lines, hundreds of thousands just getting their lights back on are back in the dark. >> it adds a little insult to injury, but that's mother nature. >> for others who never had their power restored, this cold weather is miserable. >> it's cold. very cold. you sleep at night with blankets and socks and everything else on, and it's just horrible. >> reporter: the storm is forcing airlines to cancel more than a thousand flights and leading to accidents on the roads. >> it's slippery. very slippery. >> reporter: new setbacks all along the northeast. >> i hate setbacks. i don't tolerate them usually very well. but this one i can't control. the weather is what it is. >> reporter: millions now preparing to spend another day climbing out from a new beating thanks to this season's first

winter storm. and the main concern here this morning in trenton are those wet, slippery roads. we have seen quite a few crews out watching the conditions. people here are hanging on to forecasts that things are going to warm up and dry up. they are ready for a break. reporting live in trenton, new jersey, i'm danielle leigh, back to you. time for weather and traffic on the 1s. tom kierein is here keeping an eye on what's coming going into the weekend. >> that storm just missed us yesterday and overnight. all we got were just a few flurries. a little bit of sleet last night. some sprinkles of rain. now it's gone. there's capitol hill under a cloudy sky. reagan national at 42. the wind has been gusting to around ten, 20 miles an hour this morning, makes it feel colder than that. the storm itself is spinning away, just south of nantucket. it has slowed down, but still has powerful winds. yesterday it had hurricane force winds. now winds are gusting right along the massachusetts coast and the connecticut coast to as

much as 50, 60 miles an hour, as well as way out on the eastern tip of long island. still getting some snow. parts of connecticut had up to a foot of heavy wind-driven wet snow there. and it continues to snow, but the snow activity is beginning to wind down, as is the rain. but they're still getting the wind whipped. for us locally, we're getting a few sprinkles. wet snow still lingering, parts of southern maryland and the lower eastern shore. but elsewhere, we are drying out. it's cold out of the mountains, western maryland, much of west virginia only in the 20s. much of the shenandoah valley is above freezing. the rest of virginia and maryland in the mid and upper 30s to around 40. dress accordingly. it's a cold morning. throughout the day today, it's still going to be cold and breezy. by 7:00, 8:00 this morning and hovering around 40 degrees. by noontime, upper 40s. chilly, breezy. we ought to get some breaks if
